Current Exhibitions: June 2019
2019 is the year of national and international exhibitions based on significant artist’s anniversaries – look out for:
Insiders/Outsiders festival 2019
One of our speakers, Monica Bohm-Duchen, is creative director of this year-long nationwide festival which tells the stories of the contribution made by refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe to art, music and design in the UK. This brings together events at the London Transport Museum, Tate Britain, Glyndebourne, and Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Cumbria among other venues. To find out more about the wealth of events available, go to https://insidersoutsidersfestival.org
The Bauhaus was founded 100 hundred years ago by Walter Gropius. As well as a new biography by Fiona MacCarthy due out in March, exhibitions (including one at the William Morris Gallery in London) and conferences will mark this anniversary. See www.dezeen.com/2018/11/26/bauhaus-events-guide-centenary-2019/
2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of influential artist, critic and social reformer John Ruskin. Watch out for exhibitions in London and elsewhere in UK and abroad. Go to www.artlyst.com/…/john-ruskin-200th-anniversary-celebrated-year-long-prog…
2019 marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci. Following exhibitions around the country, the Leonardo drawings in the Royal Collection are now on show in the Queen’s Gallery, London. See the Exhibition list for details.
Even further afield….2019 also marks 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt. This is being celebrated by exhibitions at museums throughout Holland. Local and regional Galleries.
I try to include as many nearby and regional galleries as possible so that we are aware of more local opportunities. If I have missed out any that you know about, do let me know. You will also see that the list of Exhibitions now includes specialist museums relating to the art of illustration – a topic covered in our 2019 programme – so our range now covers architecture, painting, sculpture, photography and print culture.
