Winchester Art History Group

Established 2008

Winchester Art History Group was founded in 2008 by local art historian, Bernard Courtis. It offers a programme of themed study on art history topics, with talks from art historians, guided visits to museums and galleries and other places of interest. It is a non profit organisation administered by a group of volunteers.

POST 1945 BRITISH ART
The aim of the programme is to address the opening up of art in Britain after 1945, to examine the broad range of exciting works that
were produced as a result and to explore their social and international significance. It will cover the artists who were loosely grouped together as the ‘School of London’, figurative painting, abstraction and Pop Art whilst not forgetting the impact of the Festival of Britain on architecture and design, as well as the effects of social changes on sculpture.

Beyond The Bonnet
The Gallery, The Arc, Winchester
26th July – 2nd November 2025

The lives of Jane Austen’s heroines such as Emma Bennet and Emma Woodhouse are well known. However the incidental female characters in Austen’s novels are less well understood.  In this exhibition celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, the precarious lives of Georgian working women from Hampshire and further afield are explored through their roles in domestic service, trade, education and childcare.
