Winchester Art History Group

Established 2008

Winchester Art History Group was founded in 2008 by local art historian, Bernard Courtis. It offers a programme of themed study on art history topics, with talks from art historians, guided visits to museums and galleries and other places of interest. It is a non profit organisation administered by a group of volunteers.

Galleries and Museums – February 2022

Galleries and Museums are opening their doors!  To see what’s on offer over the next few months please take a look at the new Exhibition Lists.  These lists will be updated as and when necessary.

January – June 2022 – Curating and Galleries

The theme for January – June 2022 is ‘Curating and Galleries’

We will be looking at the role that galleries and curation play in the world of art and the strong influence that display has upon how the art is viewed and perceived.

To see the full list of seminars go to Current Programme

If you are enjoying the current WAHG programme then you might find interesting the BBC series in which Neil MacGregor travels the length and breadth of the British Isles exploring local museums.
It’s available on  BBC Sounds https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0015474.

A+C Book Award

WAHG members may remember, in 2012 Alec Hamilton presented a WAHG seminar on the subject of Art & Crafts Churches. His research continued and, in 2020, his book on the subject was published by Lund Humphries. In December 2021, Alec was announced as the winner of the A+C (Art + Christianity) Book Award for his ‘stunning compendium’. His book was praised for its ‘genuinely pioneering work which is both scholarly and readable’. Congratulations to Alec!
